In my context, family means my own family as well as the people in this world. In short, my own families are my parents, my siblings, my wife and children. The people around me or the people in this world are also considered as families. I believe that all humans are good by nature and all of us behave in certain manners due to the strong sense of values and beliefs. Behind every action (whether positive or negative), there is always a positive intention. As a person, I do (always) make mistakes and it’s imperative for me to stay not only positive but also open. Have an open mind and open heart (big heart) to embrace and empower. |

You might be interested to know who the 2 important women in my life are. The first one is Swee and she is my mother. She is not only a great woman but a woman whom you will rarely encounter, from my point of view. As the eldest child in her family, she started work very young and had to quit school when she was nine years old. I heard that she was the top student when she quit schooling. She came from a big family where she has to work to help out in the family. Her dad was an opium smoker and she has 5 siblings to support. Life was so tough for her then. She married my dad at the age of 20 and during those times, she worked almost 16 hours a day as a farmer. She had attempted suicide but fortunately wasn’t successful. Life was indeed unfair to her when she was diagnosed with cancer 9 years ago. However, every cloud has a silver lining as she was covered with an insurance claim. So, if you ever complain life is unfair and too tough, think again. This is the message I have when I start complaining about my life. |

Another important girl in my life is my wife Corinne. She not only gives birth to 3 lovely babies, she has been very understanding and give so much to all of us who are the family and friends. Personally, I’d say she is one rare person I ever meet in my life and I am very thankful to not only marry her but also have her as my soul mate. Moreover, she is the most supportive friend for me and a person I can count on. |

From my dad, I have learnt the importance of keeping a close relationship with friends. Sometimes, I will ask myself what is a person if he or she doesn’t even have a good friend to count on? I must confess that I have a large circle of friends and the bad thing about this is that it will be hard to keep in touch with everyone. Due to time constraint, I decided that I must be able to work in such a way that I can always keep in touch with my friends. Until now, I still find that financial planning is the best career for me as a platform to maintain friendship. As a financial practitioner, I need to be always listening to worries and concerns and sharing my clients’ life goals and objectives.

As I grow older, I learn that a lot of my friends are facing different challenges in life. The main challenge is about keeping a healthy balance in our life. We are constantly trying to strike a balance between family, health, education, career and service, as well as financial and spiritual concerns. In my country, some of us might be living in a world of comparison. We compare about the type of tuition or enrichment programs for our kids. We aim to join the best clubs with facilities to enjoy and have fun. We also compare the academic qualifications earned from prestigious universities. We flash our name cards to let people know about our job status. When it comes to contributing to society, we tend to shy away by arguing that why should I be donating as I am not the rich one. Yet we drive a big car and live in a big house to show that we are doing well financially! |
